Theo's Story

Theo’s Story of Light

Theo’s Story –

This year, we are reminded once again of how your generosity helps families facing unimaginable challenges. Thanks to your support, families like the Youngs—Elizabeth, Corey, and their son, Theo—found light in the darkest of times through Ronald McDonald House Charities Ann Arbor (RMHCAA).

Theo was born on August 31, 2022. Shortly after coming home, Theo began having trouble breathing. His parents rushed him to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, Urea Cycle Disorder (CPS1). This disorder prevents his body from eliminating toxic ammonia, a life-threatening condition requiring immediate, specialized care.

Theo was transferred to Michigan Medicine C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, where he underwent multiple tests and treatments. His parents, Elizabeth and Corey, were at his side day and night, but after four sleepless nights, they were completely exhausted. That’s when their social worker reached out to let them know a room had opened up at RMHCAA, giving them a place to rest and recharge.

Theo’s journey didn’t end there. Theo’s medical team determined he needed a liver transplant. Months later, in March 2023, a match became available, and the family once again found refuge at RMHCAA during the stressful time surrounding his surgery and recovery. Over several difficult weeks and multiple surgeries, RMHCAA was their constant source of light and support.

“Staying at the House supported Theo’s care tremendously,” Elizabeth explained. “We had at least one parent rested and alert enough to speak with doctors, ask the right questions, and give updates to our family. The House made it possible for us to be the best advocates for Theo that we could be.”

Theo is now home, thriving, and preparing to become a big brother, but the support his family received from RMHCAA during their long and difficult journey will never be forgotten.

This year, we ask for your help so we can continue to provide comfort, hope, and stability to families like the Youngs. Your generosity ensures that parents can stay close to their children during medical crises, easing their burdens in ways that go beyond what words can express.

Please make a year-end gift to RMHCAA today. Together, we can provide light to families who need it most.
